GETTING STARTED

Q: I’M A COMPLETE BEGINNER AND TOTALLY INFLEXIBLE. ARE YOUR CLASSES SUITABLE FOR ME?

A: Yes! I have an on-demand Yoga for Beginners course which is a great place to start. My Gentle Hatha, PregnancyPostnatal, and Restorative classes are suitable for all levels of experience, including beginners. You don’t need to be flexible, fit or strong to start. That comes as a consequence of practicing yoga; it’s not a prerequisite.

Q: I HAVE AN INJURY OR A MEDICAL CONDITION. IS YOGA SUITABLE FOR ME?

A: If you have an injury or medical condition which may affect your yoga practice, please contact me if you are unsure as to whether the classes are suitable for you.

Q: DO I NEED ANY EQUIPMENT?

A: To start, you will just need a mat. There are many different brands and types of mat, but I'd recommend the Yogamatters sticky mat as a good starting point, or if you'd like to invest for the longer term, I love the Lululemon 5mm reversable mat. There are other items of equipment that are useful, but if you don't have these things you can substitute with objects from around your house. I'd recommend that you have 2 x bricks (substitute with sturdy shoe boxes or hardback books), 1 x block (substitute with a couple of hardback books) and a belt (substitute with a clothes belt, scarf or resistance band). It’s also nice to have a blanket or something warm to pop on for the savasana (relaxation) at the end, so that you’re nice and snug.

Q: WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

A: It’s best to wear comfortable clothing that you can move easily in, such as leggings or shorts and a t-shirt or vest. You don’t need footwear or socks as yoga is done with bare feet.

Q: SHOULD I EAT ANYTHING BEFORE I DO YOGA?

A: It’s best not to eat a heavy meal within two hours before the class. A light snack is fine.

Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO YOGA?

A: Yoga works best when you practise regularly and consistently. So the more often you do it, the more you'll feel the benefits. The beauty of doing yoga at home is that you can make it part of your every day life. Going to a class once a week is great, but there's more value in doing a little bit every day. This doesn't mean you have to do an hour per day - just 10 minutes can make a huge difference. Start with short classes and build up from there.

Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR MAKING YOGA A DAILY HABIT?

A: Yes! You can find lots of information on this in my blogs on how to practise yoga at home and how to establish habits.
